Fragmentation of ring galaxies and transformation to clumpy galaxies

چکیده

We study the fragmentation of collisional ring galaxies (CRGs) using a linear perturbation analysis that computes physical conditions gravitational instability, as determined by balance self-gravity against pressure and Coriolis forces. adopt our formalism to simulations CRGs show can accurately characterise stability onset fragmentation, although theory appears under-predict number fragments an unstable CRG factor 2. In addition, since orthodox `density-wave' model is inapplicable such self-gravitating rings, we devise simple approach describes rings propagating material waves. find toy predict whether simulated fragment or not information from their pre-collision states. also apply instability discovered at high redshift, $z=2.19$. quite velocity dispersion required for ring, therefore should be fragmentation. are rarely observed redshifts, this may because usually too faint. Since induce active star formation make bright enough observe, could explain rarity. An into massive clumps retaining initial disc rotation, thus it would evolve clumpy galaxy with low surface density in inter-clump region.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Gravitational Quenching in Massive Galaxies and Clusters by Clumpy Accretion

We consider a simple gravitational-heating mechanism for the long-term quenching of cooling flows and star formation in massive dark-matter haloes hosting elliptical galaxies and clusters. The virial shock heating in haloes > 10M⊙ triggers natural quenching in 10M⊙ haloes (Birnboim et al. 2007). Analytic estimates and simple simulations argue that the long-term quenching in haloes > Mmin ∼ 7×10...

Polar Ring Galaxies and Warps

Polar ring galaxies, where matter is in equilibrium in perpendicular orbits around spiral galaxies, are ideal objects to probe the 3D shapes of dark matter halos. The conditions to constrain the halos are that the perpendicular system does not strongly perturb the host galaxy, or that it is possible to derive back its initial shape, knowing the formation scenario of the polar ring. The formatio...

Formation of polar ring galaxies

Polar ring galaxies are peculiar systems in which a gas rich, nearly polar ring surrounds an early-type or elliptical host galaxy. Two formation scenarios for these objects have been proposed: they are thought to form either in major galaxy mergers or by tidal accretion of the polar material from a gas rich donor galaxy. Both scenarios are studied through N-body simulations including gas dynami...

Probing clumpy pasts of galaxies from AGB stars

Recent morphological studies of galaxies by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have revealed that actively star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts (z = 0.5 − 2.0) have very clumpy and irregular distributions of stars. It is however unclear whether and how these clumpy galaxies evolve into the present spiral and elliptical galaxies with regular shapes. We here propose that spatial...
